Creed doesn’t have a new album out yet, but that hasn’t stopped them from hitting the road. Scott Stapp, Mark, Brian, and Scott Phillips decided to get back together to tour earlier this year. This reunion is the second go-around since their 2004 separation. The last time was back in 2009 with their 4th studio album, Full Circle, which was accompanied by a tour that ran into 2010.  Both parties have kept busy during Creed’s downtime as Mark, Brian, and Scott Phillips formed Alter Bridge with Myles Kennedy and as Alter Bridge released their first album, One Day Remains, back in 2004. Stapp released his first solo album, The Great Divide, in 2005. He also recorded a second solo album, but it appears to be currently shelved as Scott and Mark have been writing new material for Creed.

Last night was night two of Creed’s kick off to their 2 Nights Live tour.  The tour continues through late August at the Alaska State Fair and includes a stop for the rock fest, Rocklahoma.  The festival and fair stops will be anybody’s guess as to what they will play, but the first night at the Chicago Theatre on Friday covered the entire My Own Prison album plus a few other goodies from Human Clay and Weathered.  Night two featured Human Clay from beginning to end with some of their biggest hits from My Own Prison including “One,” “My Own Prison,” and “Torn” and they capped off the night with “My Sacrifice.”  The set was a huge flashback to 1999, which included Scott growing his trademark hair back.

Creed Chicago TheatreThe stage had amazing back lighting that was appropriate for a rock band making a comeback, yet neither Scott nor Mark really talked much between songs.  Actually, Mark didn’t say anything at all and Scott only introduced a couple of the songs.   This wasn’t so much a bad thing; I was expecting more of a VH1 Storytellers’ vibe but it was still entertaining to see them play the album straight through. For “Say I” Scott said, “This was the inspiration to the album’s name. It took us away to another place.”  He also remarked right before “Wash Away the Years” that his sister inspired the song.  The entire night was semi-surreal.  With eyes closed it really felt like someone hit play on jukebox as Scott nailed each of the songs. He didn’t stray too much from the original lyrics or arrangements.

Even though the band hails from Florida, Chicago has accepted both Creed and Alter Bridge alike as one of their own.  Magic happens when Tremonti and the crew come to town, yet there was a bit of doubt as to the success of this two night residency. Scott’s history in Chicago has been a shaky one that included fans demanding refunds due to his less than tolerable behavior on stage.  Last night Scott proved himself to be as strong as ever and the crowd opened their arms to Creed, showing that everything that happened in the past is all just water under the Alter Bridge. Hopefully Creed fans will soon see a new studio album with original songs from the original band members!
