Austin’s Fuel Room
Dirge Within is:
Jerms Genske- lead vocals
Shaun Glass- guitar
Matt Szlachta- guitar
James Pezanoski- bass
Frank Harchut- drums
On the first night of a 5 city tour with Nonpoint, Dirge Within provided the hometown crowd a much needed night of head banging. If you never been to a Dirge show, you’re missing one of the best new bands to come out of Illinois; as well as one of the best live shows. Dirge Within have been known to blow away crowds and even headlining acts. In the short time they been touring, Dirge Within has performed on the Mayhem Festival, Savage Fest in Wisconsin, Korn, GWAR, Trivium, Lacuna Coil, Five Finger Death Punch and now with Nonpoint.
Jerms provided the vocal attack of brutal screams, growls, and heavy lyrics along with some of the best facial expressions in rock. A combination of looks, lyrical skills, and a connection with an audience gives Dirge Within a powerhouse front man. Add to the mix 2 blistering guitarists: Shaun Glass, abusive power chords & Matt Szlachta, blazing fret board work and then rounding out the band is James Pezanoski, deep bottom bass and Frank Harchut’s insane drum work.
On this night, they opened with “Self Medicate,” along with adding a new song to their set for the first time live. In a short set lasting 40 minutes, they left the crowd’s necks snapped and everyone covered in sweat. Afterwards, they stayed and signed at the Merch table and talked with fans till the place closed.
Do not miss Dirge Within if you’re a Metal fan!
On this same night, one of the few bands I know that could headline with Dirge Within was Nonpoint. Nonpoint is a Midwest favorite and has a very loyal following.
Elias Soriano- Vocals
Ken MacMillan-Bass, Vocals
Robb Rivera- Drums, Percussion
For a band that has been around for over 10 years and over 8 albums to their credit, you would think Nonpoint has nothing to prove. Wrong! Every time I see them, they just keep getting better and better.
Singer, Elias Soriano, has a way about him that makes you feel like you’re part of the Nonpoint family. At times, he speaks to the crowd as a Latin “Tio” (meaning, “uncle”) telling stories, to a brother who has your back in a brawl and to a friend cracking you up about smoking weed and getting wasted. Elias’ voice is one of the best in rock and can weave through many different ranges and styles; this was showcased with songs like, “Alive & Kicking,” “In the Air Tonight,” and fan’s favorite, “Bullet with a Name.”
Towards the end of the set, guitarist, Zach Broderick from Chicago, IL, sat down for the emotional song “Frontlines,” which was dedicated to all the men and women of the Armed Forces – a very powerful song about the emotional and physical risk our soldiers take for strangers every day.
Drummer, Robb Rivera, had his drum kit turned sideways to allow full view of him pounding away.
Bass player, KB, is the most animated of group, along with Robb, and had the crowd going from the start of the show to the end. There are just 4 cities left on this tour before heading to Australia for Soundwave Festival, this is one tour I am glad I did not miss.
Be sure to check out our interview with Jerms, from Dirge Within and KB, from Nonpoint coming soon.
