Rise Against - The Rave - 2012 Tour

Rise Against pulled into The Rave in Milwaukee on Sept. 16, a day after headlining 2012 Riot Fest in Chicago. Their energetic set had fans spilling over the rail within seconds their first song, “Survivor Guilt” from “Endgame.” Guitarist Zach Blair and vocalist Tim McIlrath were all-systems-go from the opening note, both leaping about the stage and feeding off the fans’ energy.

Taylor Momsen: From Gossip Girl to The Pretty Reckless

The Pretty Reckless featuring Taylor Momsen of Gossip Girl
The Rave – Milwaukee, WI

Taylor Momsen The Pretty Reckless

When I heard Taylor Momsen was starting a singing career I kinda puked in my mouth. My thought, “Another cute actress that thinks she’s got the chops to sing…great!” (please note the sarcasm). It’s reality stars like Kim Kardasian that put that bad ‘actor turned singer’ taste in my mouth. Can you blame me? After I cleared the puke in my mouth and listened to the music, I realized she wasn’t half bad. Then she hit the stage over at Lollapalooza this summer to a packed crowd. Even thought we covered Lolla I didn’t get a chance to sneak to the stage to see her and now I am thinking maybe I should have tried harder.

The Pretty Reckless is currently opening for Evanescence on tour, another great sign for the band. The crowd loved her and quite frankly she’s not one to just stand on stage and sing. As in real life, Taylor steals the scenes and the stage. She was in constant motion, and she looked like a thrasher ballerina at times doing pirouettes. Taylor has the look to keep the male audience’s attention as she was in a white teddy with thigh-high white leather lace-up boots.  Can’t really get any sexier than Momsen was on Friday night.

They played their set that included the Audioslave cover “Like a Stone.”  It was touch and go with the cover, of course, I am a die-hard Chris Cornell fan and no one compares to him, so I am a little more critical of others covering his work. Taylor’s voice hit the chorus dead on, but when Chris goes low, he really goes low, and Taylor just doesn’t have that range.

Taylor’s The Pretty Reckless isn’t straight up pop.  Performing live, Momsen sounds like she’s channeling Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Linda Perry. It’s a very alternative pop sound. Now since Taylor Momsen essentially was pushed out of Gossip Girl, she decided to take The Pretty Reckless on full-time so definitely be on the lookout for more music and touring from The Pretty Reckless.

Setlist:
Since You’re Gone
Zombie
Miss Nothing

An Evening with The Whigs

The Whigs
The Eagles Ballroom  – Milwaukee, WI

whigs

Yesterday, I witnessed the biggest rock star in the world seize the reins of our United States. Today, I saw the greatest rock show of this year (The Whigs, We Are Scientists, and Kings of Leon.) And just before the show, I was able to sit down with the rock stars of tomorrow, Julian Dorio (drums) and Tim Deaux (bass) of The Whigs. While I would put these straight-rockers from Georgia in the category ‘rock star,’ they were not so quick to consent.

After meandering our way through the labyrinth that is The Rave…that is Eagles Ballroom…that is also four other venues, we found a balcony overlooking the parking lot. The place is HUGE. Doors opened as we were walking down the stairs and several girls recognized Julian with his signature backwards trucker hat right away.

Andy: The life of a rock star, it must be rough.
Julian: Yeah. Well you should see the Kings of Leon, they can’t go anywhere without getting mobbed.

Hit the jump for the rest of the interview.
