Here are the shows for this week at The Empty Bottle!

The Empty Bottle understands how much fall and winter can be overwhelming. Halloween, Thanksgiving, New Year’s Eve – so many plans to make, so much family to appease. But have no fear – the bottle has your holidays mapped out for you. If you’re looking to get dressed up and act a fool on Saturday, October 29, they have the insanely fun line up of Coffin Pricks, Outer Minds, Mannequin Men and Football and can pretty much guarantee the best party ever. If you’re more of a traditionalist, they’ve got Apteka (celebrating their LP release), Sybris and Touched By Ghoul on Monday, October 31. Want to feel like total crap over Thanksgiving? Come spend the Thanksgiving Eve at The Empty Bottle and Thee Oh Sees – two shows, two times the fun! And this week are announcing two of their New Year’s Eve shows – the Empty Bottle is welcoming Disappears and Bare Mutants (more to be announced later) and at Logan Square Auditorium Windy City Soul Club will be taking over the room for the whole night for a bonkers dance party.

Oh – and if you’re already thinking about Christmas presents, who wouldn’t want some snazzy Empty Bottle coasters? The auction is live now through 32auctions – sweet present and helping out the American Liver Foundation- what more could you ask for?

empty bottle

Team up with the Empty Bottle to help Japan!

At the Empty Bottle, we do our best to provide a fun, friendly atmosphere that caters to all types of musicians and music fans and we’ve been lucky enough to welcome artists and enthusiasts from all over the world. This Tuesday, March 22 we welcome the Japan Nite Tour for its fourth year in-a-row and are excited for what will surely be an eclectic mix of Japanese rock.

To help with relief efforts in Northern Japan following March 11th’s devastating earthquake and ensuing tsunami, the Empty Bottle invites our fans to make a $5 donation to the American Red Cross when buying tickets online for Japan Nite. Those who donate will be given a free drink ticket for a domestic draft beer upon entering. We will be donating 10% of our ticket sales to the Red Cross, as well as leaving donation receptacles at the bar encouraging patrons (and staff!) to donate as they see fit.

People across the world have reached out to Japan since March 11. We feel it’s our duty to respond and we hope you will join us.

Empty Bottle NYE Show

It’s with great pleasure that we announce that the Empty Bottle’s New Year’s Eve show featuring Big Freedia & the Divas, Nobunny, DJ Rusty Lazer and DJ Wildcard will be offering support to Chicago’s extremely deserving Howard Brown Health Center.

For more than 36 years, Howard Brown Health Center has been providing care, preventing illness, conducting cutting-edge research and safeguarding the health of the LGBT Community of Chicago. For more than 18 years, the Empty Bottle has been bringing the best music to Chicago and prides itself on being fiercely loyal to the city (heck, they even bank at the MB across the street!).

The Empty Bottle is proud to be a lifeline to the Howard Brown Health Center and will donate a portion of the proceeds from their NYE show with Big Freedia – the Queen of Sissy Bounce and a pioneering member of the New Orleans bounce scene – to continue their ability to provide lifesaving services to the LGBT community of Chicago. $1 from every ticket sold will go directly to the HBHC and will be matched by Living Philanthropic, a remarkable project launched as “an ordinary guy’s guide to giving back every day.” TicketWeb is knocking $1 off their ticketing fees on this show and have placed an option to offer a $5 donation to the Health Center when tickets are purchased. Presenters of the show, 312/Goose Island, have also joined the cause and have pledged to donate a portion of the proceeds made from the sale of 312 for the night directly to the HBHC.

Empty Bottle will welcome Peaches back to Chicago performing her one-woman-show Peaches Christ Superstar. As the title suggests, the show is “Fuck the Pain Away”-Peaches performing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar. Peaches performs every part – from Jesus to Judas to the disciples – and she’s aided in this endeavor by Chilly Gonzales – a piano virtuoso and rap entertainer. The performance enjoyed critical acclaim and sold out crowds when it debuted in Europe and the inaugural US tour kicks off this weekend before rolling through our chilly city on Dec 14. Press has already started rolling in – Bust has a pretty substantial feature on the iconoclastic performance here and there’s a trailer that really helped me wrap my head around the whole thing that I highly recommend you peep here. Should be one heck of a performance.

The Empty Bottle

Hosting bands two nights in a row is pretty much the best. Bands get to spend two nights in a city, having the luxury of not having to pack up and drive on as soon as a show is over, if all goes well they have a night off of soundchecking and we get to spend extra time with bands we love. We’re super excited this weekend to be hosting two nights with legendary Detroit garage rockers the Gories – Friday night they’ll be joined by White Mystery and John Battles and Saturday night we welcome them back with CoCoComa and Hollows. Next weekend we have a similar luxury with Kurt Vile & the Violators and the Soft Pack over Halloween weekend. Those two bands will flip flop on the 30th and 31st for headlining duties and we’re expecting some seriously excellent costumes in our door. [Read more…]

The Empty BottleEmpty Bottle has a big weekend! On Saturday they are jazzed to welcome back the Handmade Market at 11am. When those lovely crafty people leave, they will be welcoming the Scion Metal show matinee featuring Acid Tiger, Ringworm and Blacklisted at 6pm and free with an RSVP to Scion. That night we welcome back the soul stylings of Windy City Soul Club. On Sunday, they have $3 Sunday show raging on over, hosting a very special show at the monument in Logan Square featuring the Dan Deacon Ensemble and Lightning Bolt. The forecast is in and Sunday is looking to be 75 and sunny and we couldn’t be more excited to spend a final summery day with our favorite Dance Party Master Mr. Dan Deacon.

Halloween weekend shows are announced and they’ve got two nights with two of their favorite bands. The Soft Pack and Kurt Vile & the Violators will join their forces of rock for two nights of costume covered mayhem and we could not be more excited for the flip flop headlining fun.

The Empty BottleIt’s September, so it must be time for Chicago’s World Music Festival. This Saturday, September 25 Empty Bottle welcome 3 Leg Torso – a band on a musical mission performing an eclectic synthesis of chamber music, tango, klezmer, latin and world music – and UK-based Portico Quartet – a group whose melodic, rhythmic music mixes the inspiration of Philip Glass and Steve Reich with a very contemporary kind of jazz improv. We’ve been told to expect trumpets, French horns, doumbek, tuba, saxophone, splattering electronics, clattering drums and double-bass – quite an exciting departure for our humble stage.

Beauty Bar Spotlights

Beauty Bar ChicagoWith events booked daily at the Beauty Bar, here are some of the upcoming events they are hosting that will be insanely fun or particularly rad that deserve a bit more elaboration.

September 11 – Venus Zine After Hours Presents Does It Offend You, Yeah?
The Brits are back and Venus Zine nabbed them for their monthly After Hours series at Beauty Bar. Does It Offend You, Yeah? play the Double Door on Saturday night with Kele (of Bloc Party fame and solo dance record excitement) and then head straight for our glittery turn tables. Their newest effort, Don’t Say We Didn’t Warn You is an extravaganza of dance punk and we can only imagine what jams they count among their influences – it should be a very interesting night at the sonic mercy of this quintet of rabble rousers.

September 18 – Best Coast DJ set
We love hosting bands when they come through the city. Our Besty Coastys will be at the Metro next Saturday with Male Bonding, Free Energy and Titus Andronicus but if you want to get besty with these Los Angelenos while they’re in town, Beauty Bar is where it’s at. Best Coast played the Empty Bottle in July and sound so much like summer it makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Their debut LP, Crazy For You, out via the superb Mexican Summer, is half an hour of genuinely romantic sandy jams. Hazy, dreamy and full of maudlin and magical songs, this duo have multiple tricks up their sleeves to make us forget that we’re post-Labor Day.

The Empty BottleThe lovely fellas of Phosphorescent play the Bottle on August 5. If fans purchase advance tix to the show they receive a free MP3 download of Phosphorescent track “Hard to Be Humble.” If you are going to grace us with a show preview and would like to throw that tidbit in, that would be swell. If you haven’t seen these guys yet and are free next Thursday, I’d highly recommend coming to check the band out. It’s been awhile since the show was simply Matthew singing his guts out on stage in a lit-up hand-fashioned jacket, and the full band version of Phosphorescent that’s touring the States these days is really, really lovely.

The Empty BottleIt’s a big weekend for rock in Chicago and the Empty Bottle’s got their own afterparties if you’re not too burned, fried, exhausted, dehydrated, drunk or otherwise incapacitated to make it out late night. After the epic singalongs of Broken Social Scene, they are hosting Barcelona’s Delorean and their dance/indie pop hybrid celebration. Once the dancing’s done with LCD Soundsystem, get ready to jazzed up to welcome the chill, summer vibing Best Coast and Candy Claws. And if you’re still standing (and reminiscing) with Pavement at the end of it all, the Empty Bottle is hosting the Panache Family players featuring some of our favorite noise makers in Human Eye and the lovely Coathangers.
