Free Music Download: Cairo Knife Fight’s “The Origin Of Slaves”

Cairo Knife Fight is Nick Gaffaney on Drums/Vocals/Bass/Loops and Aaron Tokona – on Guitars/Vocals.  This electro power rock duo hail from Christchurch, New Zealand and as they note on their Facebook Page, “This is a band page. That means we are a band. Contrary to popular opinion; we are not a cult.”

The duo are about to make their huge US debut in 2012 at the SXSW music festival in Austin.  To prep the US for their arrival they released “The Origin Of Slaves,” off their EP II,  as a free music download.  At first listen I completely see how these guys opened for Foo Fighters.  They have a huge sound for being a power rock duo.

You can check the song out via YouTube (below) or just take my word for it and download the track!

Tennis Anyone?

MIXTAPE: Tennis Mixtape for International Tapes

Two on a big ocean.

Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore met while studying philosophy in college. The two agreed that upon graduating they would sell their collective possessions and leave behind their lives in Denver. They planned to buy a small sailboat and spend the next year living aboard and traveling exclusively under sail. For years this dream was carefully nurtured while preparations were made. Learning to sail and selecting a boat is difficult to accomplish from a landlocked state. Their nautical self-education consisted of a steady diet of how-to books and videos.

They were motivated by stories shared by sailors like Joshua Slocum, or Lin and Larry Pardey. On a sailboat minimalism transcends efficiency. There are no schedules, no agendas, or the many concerns that come with modern life. A sailor cares only for the direction of the wind and the condition of the water. Riley and Moore did not want their perception of the world to be shaped by spreadsheets, or facts gleaned in classrooms. They wanted a life of experience unmediated by people or things, a life of intimate participation with their environment. Cell phones, television, household appliances, the conveniences of modern life were traded for simplicity and contentment. A return to evenings spent indulging in the profound silence of the remotest regions, far from the yellowy glow of civilization.

Voyaging along the North Atlantic coastline for seven months at an average speed of five miles an hour lends itself to reordering one’s priorities. The long way is the beautiful one. The hard way is the most rewarding. Two years after completing their 2500 nautical mile voyage, Riley and Moore’s experience has led them to seek out a new endeavor. Their music bears the mark of months spent alone with the sea and each other. It is tinged with the sweet affection of new lovers. It bears the uncluttered aesthetic of time spent in remote and uninhabited regions. Their music is a modest attempt to translate an old truth rediscovered.

Free Music Download: Lolene, Dinosaur Bones, Freezepop, Depressed Buttons, I Fight Dragons, The Waylons, & Rumspringa

I’ve been noticing a trend in my inbox lately. More and more artists are just giving away music for free to their fans. In that spirit we are starting a weekly Free Music Downloads post.  It’ll feature artists you may already know to the ones you should.

This Week:

LOLENE: Mixtape “Cracked Not Broken” (Electro/Pop/Dance)

Lolene was about to release Elecktric Hotel then someone leaked the tracks…BOO! Lolene went into the studio and cut a mixtape and she’s releasing it for free for her Facebook fans.  It’s worth the download as she tries her hand at rapping her version of  “I Wish”, covering ABBA, and remixing “Rich” and “Sexy People.”

Day Of Fire “Losing All” Released 1/26/2010 FREE DOWNLOAD AVAILABLE

day of fire

Nashville-based rock band DAY OF FIRE have just released their third CD LOSING ALL–a powerful hard-rock record that explores the meaning of rebirth–January 26 via Razor And Tie. After four special CD release shows in the Southeast, DAY OF FIRE will join Cold and Nonpoint on the road February 16 for a run of U.S. shows.

LOSING ALL’s first single “Lately” is currently at #35 and climbing on R&R’s Active Rock Monitor chart. Drummer Zach Simms, who wrote the chorus during a time of turmoil surrounding the band, reveals that the song is about “letting go of the things that have been clouding your mind.” He continues, “hopefully it will give people a reason to chase their dream that may have been shattered by someone telling them that they could never achieve it.”

June 12, 2009; Washington, D.C. – NPR Music is streaming the entire new albums from Moby and Regina Spektor, weeks before their official release dates. Moby’s album Wait For Me and Spektor’s album Far will both be available at for free, on-demand listening, before they hit stores, as part of the site’s “Exclusive First Listen” series.

Wait For Me, the ninth album from DJ and innovative musician Moby, will be available at NPR Music from June 15 at 11:59PM (ET) until June 30. Moby’s inspiration for this work came from a speech made by filmmaker David Lynch with the message “creativity without marketplace pressure is good.” Moby fully embraced this idea by self-producing the album solely in his home studio with contributions from his friends. The resulting album is a departure from his recent releases and has a much more personal tone. [For more Moby: check out his remix of the theme song for the NPR news quiz Wait, Wait.Don’t Tell Me!, which can be heard at the show’s website.

The Deep Vibration Give Away wo new MP3s!

While the band was in the studio with producer Niko Bolas (Neil Young, My Morning Jacket), they recorded way more tracks than what ended up on their debut EP, Veracruz. Some songs were to be kept for their upcoming LP. Some didn’t fit the intended mood of the EP. But the always prolific band didn’t let that stop them from pushing their own boundaries and experimenting with unique and different sounds of “alt country”. Bringing a harder edge to their previous work and if the song calls for it, incorporating horns.

Check two new unreleased tracks now!

“Coal Mine” –

“Ten Cents Red” –

The band also released some behind the scenes footage of them in the studio. Check out the first installment here.

NIN Review: The Slip

NIN the slip cover

I said I would review the album The Slip, so here it goes.

It sounds like the NIN sound that NIN fans are accustomed to. Nothing that reinvents NIN and nothing that strays to far from their core sound.

Any NIN fan should download it because it’s Trent Reznor and free, but for new fans there are better albums to check out.  You can see download options for The Slip here.

I feel like this album is more famous for being free than the music on the album.

By the way, this is not car music. There is quite a bit of mellow “acid trip” music on here. I was listening to it driving at night and had to turn it off because it really mellowed me out.
