Goo Goo Dolls - 2014 Acoustic Tour

The Goo Goo Dolls packed the Meyer Theatre in Green Bay, Wis., for an evening of acoustic music on April 27. This tour is a drastic departure from their status quo as it’s being staged in intimate venues, stripped of their electric guitars and performed in a “VH1 Story Tellers” setting. The concept follows on the heels of their most recent tour in support of “Magnetic.”

Goo Goo Dolls Charter one Pavilion Chicago 32 HF

Goo Goo Dolls just released Something For The Rest Of Us on Warner Brothers Records and on tour with Michelle Branch and Parachute.  They also have a song on the Transformers soundtrack, “All That You Are.” The trio are very successful with songs on soundtracks. Lets take you back to “Iris” on The City of Angels soundtrack. Can you say hit?

The Charter One Pavilion site just blocks from Chicago’s Field Museum and right up to the shores of Lake Michigan.  The Pavilion’s location adds the extra touch to what was nothing but a stellar show even with high humidity that left everyone coated in sweat.  Goo Goo Dolls delivers nothing but rock and roll music with a rock and roll stage show to boot. It wasn’t long into the set when they pulled out “Slide“.  The also launched black balloons into the crowd for their hit “Black Balloon” making the front of the crowd distracted and happy.

Many left their seats at the Pavilion and headed up to the front of the stage. The band started into a song and it was moments later the  band stopped and John asked the crowd of fans, “Does anyone know this one?” I don’t think many knew the song judging by the reaction of the fans.  The song was “Cuz You’re Gone.” Their set also included one of their biggest hits “Name“,  “January Friend,” and the first single off their last EP Waiting For The Rest Of It,Home“.

For those those who need to catch up with John Rzeznik,  Amy Harris talked to John Rzeznik recently about the bands future, their current tour with Michelle Branch, and moving back to the East Coast.

For those fans who need some more Goo they are releasing a Live EP tomorrow, Live From SOHO.

Michelle Branch is Back!

Michelle Branch goo goo dolls tour Chicago 7

It’s been 8 years since Michelle Branch released a solo album.  In the 8 years she’s had a kid with her husband, formed a country music duo, The Wreckers, and released an EP of country-esc songs on her own.  This fall she will release her new album West Coast Time.  The first single off the album is “Loud Music” which is currently available on iTunes.  Michelle is currently on tour with the Goo Goo Dolls and Parachute.

Michelle took the Charter One Pavilion stage with just her husband/bass player Teddy and her guitar player.  One of the first things she said to the crowd was how she is so happy to be out on the road again. The set started off strong with her hit “Everywhere”, “Breathe”, and the well received new single “Loud Music”.  She introduced “Game of Love” by telling her story of the making of video.  It was shot right here in Chicago.  She said she wishes every video could be shot in Chicago because of the gracious hospitality. She went on saying that when people found out they were shooting the video in their neighborhood, they brought out food and “bathtub tequila” for the crew.  It was a great story and is a great song, but the mood shifted as the backing music for “Game of Love” kicked it. It was too loud and distorted.  They also turned the tempo down on the song that made it almost unrecognizable. We all looked at each other hoping the rest of the set wasn’t going to take that path.

Once Michelle said, “Is it ok if I play a Wrecker’s song?” The crowd cheered with approval.  She said, “I am still getting used to playing this alone.” The song was a great transition from “Game of Love” which, I hate to say it, was the low point of the night.  “Leave the Pieces” was a hit and she nailed it with just accompaniment with a bass player and her guitar player from Australia, who she says, “Is never in a bad mood!”

Last night was the first time she’s ever played The Charter One Pavilion and the crowd was in for a special treat as Michelle performed “For Dear Life” for the first time live. She said, “You always remember your first, right?”  She also mentioned that she wrote that for her husband and then transitioned to “Happy Now?” which was written for an ex. Michelle laughed, “awkward” as she turned to her husband, who she said, “has no choice but to be in my band!”  This and the other new song she performed, “Spark”, are throwbacks to her Spirit Rooms days, but a little more grown up.

I felt like I was at a taping of VH1 Storytellers with her.  Michelle told stories, but I shouldn’t have been too surprised because if you follow her on Facebook she shares a lot about what’s going on in her days.  She isn’t one of those very private people.  She talked about wanting to be the house band for a venue in Chicago because there was so much to do. Her and her daughter spent the day running a muck in the Field Museum, which is only blocks from the Charter One Pavilion.  She was also appeared genuinely happy and comfortable to be onstage and ready for the spotlight again.

She closed with “All I Wanted” and left the crowd ready for the Goo Goo Dolls.

John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls Speaks!

The Goo Goo Dolls have come a long way since they started in 1986 in the crumbling rust belt city of Buffalo, New York where the band was probably started for no better reason than to kill time, make some music, and hopefully get a few free beers from the clubs where they were lucky enough to get a gig. They have stayed together for over two decades and continue to create hits on the music charts. Their current single “All That You Are” is getting serious radio play and featured in the newest installment of the Transformers franchise, Transformers: Dark of The Moon.

Amy spoke with vocalist and lead guitarist John Rzeznik about tour life, longevity, and the future of the super group. The band will be playing in Cincinnati at the PNC Pavilion at Riverbend on July 13t to support their current album Something for the Rest of Us.

On this album with his songwriting, Rzeznik confronts some of the issues that have become part of many people’s everyday lives.

Amy:  You guys have written a lot of songs over the years and had so many hits. What is the difference when you get asked to write songs for a movie soundtrack like Transformers or “Iris” from City of Angels versus just writing songs for touring or for a record?

To read the rest of the interview head over to Thefirst3songs.com.

Goo Goo Dolls’ John Rzeznik on LIVE FROM DARYL’S HOUSE this Sunday, May 15

May 13, 2011 – (Burbank, CA) — Goo Goo Doll’s John Rzeznik and Daryl Hall know a little something about what it takes to be a lead singer in a rock band, and they put that experience to good use on a selection from the catalog of both groups on the 42nd edition ofLive From Daryl’s House. The newest installment of the Webby and MTV O Music award-winning Internet series, which last year made its broadcast debut on WGN America to impressive ratings, will debut at www.lfdh.com this Sunday, May 15th.

The show brought together Hall and Rzeznik for a day-long session that included a stellar seven song set. The two collaborated on Goo Goo’s hits, “Iris” and “Slide,” both from 1998’s triple-platinum Dizzy Up the Girl, with the former also appearing on the City of Angels soundtrack album, where it spent a record-breaking 18 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay charts and was nominated for three Grammys. Daryl and John also perform a pair of songs from the Goo Goo Dolls’ 2010 album, Something for the Rest of Us, including“Home” and “Still Your Song.” The three Daryl Hall penned numbers featured are “Did It in a Minute,” a Top 10 hit from 1981’s Private Eyes, “Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid,” on 1984’s Big Bam Boom and the rare “Want To,” originally included on 1997’s Marigold Sky, a co-write with the late T-Bone Wolk.

“It was an amazing day of playing music with a legend and then sitting down for dinner afterward,” marveled Rzeznik about his appearance. “Definitely a day I will always remember.”

Says Daryl: “I love John! He’s a great singer with a quick sense of humor and to my surprise, a really professional cook. He can come over anytime and rattle those pots and pans.”

Goo Goo Dolls have remained one of the most acclaimed songwriting forces in rock music for over two decades. The Grammy-nominated, multi-format chart toppers have enjoyed a string of hits that have earned the band the all-time airplay record for “The Most Top 10 Hit Singles in History,” according to Billboard’s Nielsen BDS-based Adult Top 40 chart. Singer/songwriter John Rzeznik has been the recipient of the Songwriters Hall of Fame Hal David Starlight Award, and has penned a series of hits beginning in 1995 with the #1 “Name,” “Iris” and “Slide,” followed by “Black Balloon,” “Broadway,” “Here is Gone,” “Big Machine,” “Sympathy,” “Better Days,” “Stay With You” and “Let Love In.” Goo Goo Dolls’ newest album, Something for the Rest of Us, debuted at # 7 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, earning raves from such media outlets as Billboard and USA Today.

The past 18 months have marked a steady stream of superlatives and recognition for Live from Daryl’s House, with Hall receiving a Webby Award for Best Variety series from more than 10,000 entries at the 14th annual ceremony last summer at N.Y.’s Cipriani Wall Street.

The 41 previous episodes of Live From Daryl’s House have featured a mix of well-known performers Rob Thomas, Train, Smokey Robinson, The Doors’ Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek, Toots Hibbert, Nick Lowe, K.T. Tunstall, Todd Rundgren, Travie McCoy, Dave Stewart and Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump along with newcomers such as Eric Hutchinson, Chromeo, Cash Money rocker Kevin Rudolf, Matt Nathanson, Parachute, Plain White T’s, Eli “Paperboy” Reed, soul diva Sharon Jones, Diane Birch, L.A. neo-R&B party band Fitz & the Tantrums, hot new alternative band Neon Trees and veteran alternative mainstays Guster.
