Battle Of The Bands Round Two: LIGHTS

LIGHTS Aragon Chicago

Second to take the stage at last Friday night’s “Battle of the Bands” was LIGHTS. Also known as Canadian songstress Valerie Poxleitner, LIGHTS has become a force to reckon with in the electro-synthpop, new wave world of modern music. This girl is yet another wildly talented singer/songwriter who was included in the lineup for the evening, sandwiched between Paper Route and Owl City. LIGHTS recreated many of the recorded versions of her songs for the live show, which brilliantly displayed the full belting potential of her normally soft and airy vocal chops.

Lights Bottom Lounge - Chicago, IL

Seeing Lights live in concert after listening to her EP at least once every day for the past three months or so was a dream come true. I had first heard the song “Drive My Soul” on MTV’s “The Hills.” Yes, I know, I admit to watching Lauren Conrad and Co. live the glamorous life in L.A. on that ridiculous reality TV show that continues to garner my attention week after week. However, in my defense, I could care less about the “busy” and “dramatic” lives of these girls who don’t have to worry about making their rent each month or paying their bills. I watch the show for the music believe it or not. Even though the show features some pretty mainstream artists occasionally, it also features placements of unknown indie artists whose music is just as good (if not better) than their mega-successful contemporaries. Anyway, while watching the show back in September around the beginning of Season 4, I also happened to be reading a magazine. Out of nowhere, my ears picked up on this new sound and melody and voice that I had never heard before, but instantly LOVED. I jerked my head up (as if that would make me hear better?) and to my utter delight saw the title of the song and the artist it was performed by scroll across the bottom of the screen while LC was breaking up with her current flame…

The screen shot read: “Drive My Soul” by Lights. I can’t even begin to try and explain how excited I felt upon hearing this song. It was like NOTHING I have heard on “The Hills” ever before (I have been watching since Season 1). I actually could not WAIT until the show was over, so that I could run up to my bedroom, go to the iTunes store, look up this Lights person (group?) and check out the 30-second snippets of all of her songs. Well, I pretty much loved all of them. Keep in mind though, that there are only six songs on the Lights EP, her debut album. I bought the Lights EP within two minutes of finding it on iTunes. From that day on, I had to listen to it on my iTouch or iPod each and every day. Her music just somehow makes me feel better about my day/night/life/self. I can’t explain it. Lights performed all six of her EP’s songs at the Chicago show, as well as treating the crowd to two new songs that will be on her full-length album, which will be released next summer. The first and third songs of her set were new, and unfortunately I cannot remember the names of them for the life of me – sorry! I think one of them is called “Savior,” but don’t quote me on that.
