Jump Clubb Covers Elliot Smith’s “Los Angeles”

Debut LP The Love Of No Dance Out NOW

Watch “Rather Be Played” Video

Meet Jump Clubb. A band from Beverly Hills whose music combines dance, disco, and electronic styles with indie mentalities and vocals straight from the height of the lo-fi era. Think LCD Soundsystem meets Beat Happening. Or Hot Chip meets Eric’s Trip. The juxtoposition melds an interesting style of music that Jump Clubb has coined “No Dance”. On one hand you have the upbeat soul and funk influence that aims at getting anyone and everyone up and dancing. This mixed with lo-fi and low energy vocals which describe tales of heartbreak and Jump Clubb’s own view of their insecure and superficial hometown, creates a wonderful style that urges you to rethink your next trip to the dancefloor. “No Dance” is a musical statement that transcends their city’s physical and mental boundries and questions the current state of the music listener from LA celebrity to Brooklyn hipster.

Dusted Magazine
“…this guy is great. Transitional T. Rex style glam ride of the ‘Ride A White Swan’ stripe meets jaunty, sardonic Medway boot party on ‘Man In The Woods,’ just strollin’ down the lane to the village, kicking every ass in sight.”

LA Vinyl Records Examiner
“…one of Memphis’ most prolific and charismatic bands.”

Memphis Commerical Appeal

“…irresistible melodic underpinning that makes this a hard record to take off your turntable.”

Believe it or not, but being involved with the seedy Memphis punk underground in the mid 1990s can have its advantages. For Rich Crook, falling in with teenage terrors, The Reatards came right at the perfect time in his budding musical life. Stepping into a band with a very much still-teenage Jay Reatard between the release of their debut LP and their shambolic first European tour at the end of 1998 (??), Crook was always the steady force of somewhat actual consciousness that kept everything in balance. His appearance on the ‘Grown Up Fucked Up’ LP solidified his spot in The Reatards officially, and upon the band’s implosion in early 1999, he joined Jay and Alicja Trout of The Clears in the next phase of their sonic obliteration, the notorious Lost Sounds. As this tightly-wound synth-punk unit quickly snapped into their place in the universe, endless touring ensued, and as most of the US never really got a good look at the Reatards live, people flocked out en masse for any and every Lost Sounds show that criss-crossed across the country over the next three years.

Los Temerarios @ All-State Arena in Chicago

Los Temerarios
All-State Arena – Rosemont, IL
5/2/2009

Written by: Julio Diaz

On 5.12 At The Mint
They will soon release album of new material Sewn Together on
Megaforce Records on May 12th

Everyone from Nirvana to Pavement to Stone Temple Pilots cite Meat Puppets as one of the most significant American bands.

The highly influential Meat Puppets started as a punk rock band, but established their own unique style, blending punk with country and psychedelic rock. Meat Puppets later gained significant exposure when the Kirkwood brothers served as guest musicians on Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance in 1993. The band’s subsequent album Too High to Die went gold, selling over 500,000 albums, and became their most successful release. The band reunited in 2006.

Recorded at The Saltmine in Phoenix, Arizona in winter 2009, the album features the Kirkwood brothers, Cris and Curt, with drummer Ted Marcus.

Dr. Denis Leary to Release “At the Rehab”

denis leary

Denis Leary is back with a timely new song, “At the Rehab,” skewering the celebrity church of the 21st century – the rehabilitation center. The single will be released on COMEDY CENTRAL Records digitally on March 24th. The single is digital-only and will be available exclusively through iTunes for the first two weeks.

In March, Leary and his band will embark on “The Rescue Me Comedy Tour” – a multi-city tour including Radio City Music Hall and the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Sleepy Sun Play Los Angeles CA At The Echo On March 8th

SXSW Dates To Come
Play ATP Festival May 8th
Debut LP “Embrace” Out May 26th On ATP/R

“San Francisco’s Sleepy Sun is one of those every-so-often bands that absorbs, processes, and spits out its influences in such a way as to make pee run down the pants legs of music reviewers everywhere…They are designed to explode the most expanded of frontal lobes…”  -SF Weekly

“…Comfortable, a high drenched in fog, floating inland on ocean wind. Compositionally, things feel natural and free. Each instrument as integral as the rest. Breathing, moving…” -Aquarius Records

“Sleepy Sun’s songs, mellifluously flowing between bittersweet balladry and paranoid, hazy atmospherics, are like a 2am car ride — not going somewhere, not coming back, but taking an unexpected detour through uncertain terrain. A sublime fog, the mood is both assured and undefined, leaving me to drift, to slither, through a spectrum that ranges from the nostalgic to the anxious, from the freewheeling to the claustrophobic….” -Naturalismo

“…This collective of young longbeards has become one of the town’s most beloved bands in a very short period of time, laying down lumbering servings of heavy psychedelic freakadelia and dusted Northern Californian psych-folk. Williams’ angelic voice weaves in-between a sublimely mind-rattling cacophony reminiscent of Santa Cruz psych-rock alumni Comets on Fire at their headiest…If rapturous local buzz is any indication, Sleepy Sun might be the best bet of the next Santa Cruz band to break big…” -Metro Santa Cruz

Sleepy Sun have an honest, high-energy show that ranges from hard, early Sabbath-level rock to a genuine gospel/spiritual vibe, all making Sleepy Sun a really tough act to follow. Their discipline, dynamics, dominance over tempo (the subtlest and most commonly overlooked musical device), and brooding nature evokes comparisons as disparate as Black Sabbath, George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass”, Pink Floyd and Bjork . . . and we still haven’t heard the record. -The Deli Magazine SF

SPIN **** (4 Stars) : “This Brooklyn group’s previous albums established them as shoegaze confectioners, molding candy swirls out of Yuki Chikudate’s soaring, translucent voice and guitarist James Hanna’s Kevin Shields–worshiping production. But here, Asobi Seksu do something My Bloody Valentine can’t — leave Shields behind. “Sing Tomorrow’s Praise” and “Me & Mary” evoke iciness over icing, with more expansive cool than insidious sweetness. And the duo’s seasick guitars (“Layers”), ethereal synths (“Gliss”), and Japanese lyricism (“Meh No Mae”) still provide plenty of geeky studio epiphanies.”

Chris Brown Issues Statement On Rihanna Incident

chris brown

After being arrested for allegedly assaulting, girlfriend, Rhianna in the early-morning hours before the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, Chris Brown has finally broken his silence and issued a statement that says, “Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired.” Without ever mentioning Rihanna by name, or the exact nature of “what transpired,” the singer says he has been seeking counseling from his pastor, mother and loved ones. “I am committed, with God’s help, to emerging a better person,” he says.

Suposedly Brown’s short statement was issued with the help of a public relations company that specializes in crisis management. It’s the first official words released by either singer’s camp regarding the incident; on Sunday, February 8th, Rihanna’s rep issued the brief “Rihanna is well. Thank you for concern and support” but has said nothing publicly since then. Relatives of the two stars have given interviews to the press; both Rihanna’s and Brown’s fathers have spoken to People. “At some point, she will speak out,” Ronald Fenty told People.com of Rihanna. “I hope she will stand up for women all over the world.” Clinton Brown described his son as “remorseful” and “concerned” in his interview.

In the absence of official statements from Brown, Rihanna and the Los Angeles Police Department, rumors and speculation over the alleged dispute that left Rhianna with “horrific” facial injuries and bite marks on her arms and hands. Brown addressed that in his statement, adding, “Much of what has been speculated or reported on blogs and/or reported in the media is wrong. While I would like to be able to talk about this more, until the legal issues are resolved, this is all I can say except that I have not written any messages or made any posts to Facebook, on blogs or any place else. Those posts or writings under my name are frauds.”

Aaron Beaumont Plays in LOS ANGELES at Hotel Cafe on Friday, February 13th

“Nothing’s Forever, Not Even Goodbye” Out Now On Milan Records

LA Weekly:
Maybe, just maybe, a new Elton John might be just what the doctor ordered, someone who can bring a new life to the ancient music-hall/pop piano-man tradition, with clear-headed songs of genuinely witty lyrical oomph and, most of all, a historically informed musical depth — all delivered with style, grace, wit and élan, of course. Your candidate for such a new contender might very well be one Aaron Beaumont”

Flavorpill LA
:

“With flurries of Wurlitzer, glockenspiel, and reindeer bells layering Aaron Beaumont’s tunes, the singer/songwriter seems to have popped out of a music box. In fact, Beaumont recently relocated from Nashville, bringing with him a folky aesthetic chock full of charm and whimsy. Tonight, Beaumont celebrates the release of his debut album, Nothing’s Forever (Not Even Goodbye), on the local indie Milan Records. The record’s highlights include piano-centric love songs “The Time Will Come,” “The Park Bench Song,” and “Julia,” each laced with an almost anachronistic sincerity that makes Beaumont’s tunes all the more irresistible.”Guilt Free Pleasures: Artist to Watch in ’09

“Aaron Beaumont has got it all – the talent, the voice, the looks, the wardrobe. He writes beautiful piano ballads and I can picture him rocketing to fame pretty swiftly, so listen to him now so that you can say “I knew him before he was famous.”

Gabriella Cilmi’s Whole Lotta Love in Los Angeles

Gabriella Cilmi
Hotel Café – Los Angeles, CA
1/26/2009

Gabriella Cilmi Hotel Café - Los Angeles, CA 1/26/2009

This was a first time for me at the Hotel Café as it was also Gabriella’s. Gabriella is from Australia and this was her first show in Los Angeles. She was showcasing in the famous LA venue that is known for breaking singer/songwriters. It’s an amazing little place. She also has a new album scheduled to be released on March 17, 2009 called Lessons to Be Learned off Universal Music Group.

The place is packed and she gets onstage and is already full animated. She opens with her ultra-super poppy “Got No Place to Go.” I call it the Caterpillar song. She sings of a caterpillar in her soul, maybe it’s an Australian thing. See the Album Review Here.

Gabriella is nailing every song as if she sang the songs in one take off the album. Ok, she did miss a line during the first song but continues singing. Could be first time nerves? I would be a tad nervous if I were an artist and was told I had a gig at Hotel Café and oh yes, you’re showcasing too.

Sanctuary and Got No Place to go are my favorites off the album and she performed them strongly. The audience seemed very receptive to her and her first American single, “Sweet About Me.” If you need a dose of some pop music that is slightly off-kilter Gabriella is for you.

I wasn’t ready for the ballads in the set but I guess she had to throw them in. She did cover Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River” which received screams and shouts from the audience. This girl has a huge voice for her little body. She is a cross between Amy Winehouse and Mary J. Blige. She also covered Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” It’s the song that she says, “Blew up her world.” It was very impressive but very straining on one’s vocal chords.

Expect great live performances from this one. She has unbelievable talent and energy. Oh course she is still only 17 years old. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for future tour dates.

Setlist:
Got No Place to Go
Sanctuary
Sweet About Me
Cigs and Lies
Safer
Cry Me a River
Save the Lives
Whole Lotta Love

The Devil Makes Three play in LOS ANGELES
at The House Of Blues on 12.27.08
& 12.28.08 for their last live shows of 2008!

Again, if you didn’t catch them last month,
make sure you don’t miss this trio’s punky
vintage American
backporch blues this time!

Laced with elements of ragtime, country, folk and  rockabilly, the critically praised, drummer-less trio – consisting of  guitarist/frontman Pete Bernhard, stand-up bassist Lucia Turino and guitarist  Cooper McBean – brings forth a genuine approach to acoustic music that is deeply steeped in rhythm and alive with three part harmonies which is pleasingly dissimilar to most other bands in modern music.

Long Beach’s On Blast Heading to the Viper Room!

They hail from Long Beach, California and are described as electronic rock with a dash of alternative. As with many bands and artists the wait for getting signed, if that’s what you are after, is a long winding road. On Blast’s break came after peddling their demo around, and getting the attention of LA’s famous KROQ radio. KROQ DJ Stryker caught hold of their music and played “Wanna Lose Control” during the ever so popular drive time. FYI: KROQ can get you a great fan base if the DJ’s like you.

They finished recording their album at the beginning of October and are hitting the road now through the beginning of the year.  They look like down to earth guys and really excited and grateful for where they are at right now. Check out Myspace for the guys bar-b-qing and having fun! We are covering their show at the Viper Room on December 22nd, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for the show review.

Poets and Pornstars to Run Devil Run: Rockin’ The Roxy

Poets and Pornstars
The Roxy – Hollywood, CA
9/13/2008

Poets and Pornstars The Roxy - Hollywood, CA 9/13/2008

Poets and Pornstars are back on the map after their little hiatus from the rock and roll spotlight. Last August they released their first album, made rounds at all the Southern California hot spots and then their lead singer left. One might think the frontman of a band leaving is the ultimate death of the band, it was for Journey anyways. This band reinvented itself with a new singer, Jermey Aric, and the new chemistry within the band.

Poets and Pornstars The Roxy - Hollywood, CA 9/13/2008The Poets comeback show was August 8th 2008. Yeah we missed it, but we ended up being at one hell of a rock show on Saturday night at the Roxy. Before the Poets and Pornstars performance we caught up with them to talk about life after Hal, changing the name of the band, the new singer, album, and touring, but first the show review.

The was filled with super sex ninja Poet’s fans, most armed with camera and camcorders. This quintet owned the stage for their entire set. The new frontman Jeremy was winning over the crowd on Saturday. I know I’ll get flack for saying this but his voice resembles the likes of Bon Scott. Plus Jeremy and Sally seem to have a natural onstage chemistry as if they were playing together for years.

Midway through their set they slowed it down a bit with the ever-so-catchy “In the Dark”. Randy who graced the keys for most of the night also stepped to the mic for a couple songs with Jack(bottle) in hand.

They also played a new song called “Beautiful Being” then Randy hopped on vocals again. The curtains dropped at the last song and the crowd went absolutely nuts wanting more. They chanted as if they were trying to wake the dead. Unfortunately due to time constraints there was no encore. It’s all ok in the end because Poets and Pornstars Run Devil Run (new band members+new chemistry=new band name) is releasing an EP early winter. There is also rumbling of touring. Stay Tuned for the interview and more details. Also for more information an upcoming events visit their MySpace.

Building a Better Spaceship The Viper Room Los AngelesRoss and Vin

It was Tuesday night at the Viper Room in West Hollywood. We headed up to see Building a Better Spaceship, a local band to the Los Angeles area music scene.

This band is headed to some great places in the music industry. Building a Better Space Ship has played with acts such as Avenged Sevenfold, Lifehouse, Unwritten Law, 311, The Killers, 30 Seconds to Mars, and Hoobastank. The list is quite long.

Building a Better Spaceship The Viper Room Los Angeles

I had two hours to listen to their self-titled album on the car ride home.

Building a Better Spaceship The Viper Room Los AngelesSparky and I couldn’t get past track 2 on the album, “Falling in Line”. This is the song! If you haven’t heard it check their MySpaceout to hear it. The song is catchy with the sound of some great radio rock. If I get a Youtube clip of it or a recording I will post it because everybody needs to hear this song!

At the Viper Room they rocked the place and brought quite a crowd with them. They started at 9:30pm, which is early in Viper Time, but the band had to showcase, thus playing early.  That aside, the guys had the girls dancing up front and even the meanest looking man in the joint and the hippie in the corner were tapping their feet to the rhythm.

It’s been a long time since a band caught my attention like this. The melody and rhythms of each song were intense and well written. The guys shared in those duties and the band was very tight onstage and put on a hyper kinetic show.

This 5-piece rock band is one to keep your eyes on!

They have a show on September 26th at the 710 Club in Pacific Beach, California.  Plus, they now have residency at the Viper Room starting in October. If you live in the Southern California region and have a moment to catch the quintet live, it is a must.

The Setlist:

Dry My Eyes
This Time
Pacific
Rainbow
Carousel
Falling in Line
Bullet Proof

The Riders: 200 Miles From Everywhere

The Riders
200 Miles from Everywhere

Ok, so I’ve been selfishly listening to this CD for a week or so and I must say this is a must have for everyone. My personal favorites off this album are “Someday Soon”, “Too Far Away Tonight”, and “Angels Can’t Carry Roses.” I would describe them as rock and in the same categories as Tom Petty and along the lines of U2. The CD is GREAT to listen to everywhere. In the car, at home, parties, or a relaxing day at the beach with you and that special someone! (Disclaimer: Special someone not provided!)
