An abundance of Cirque du Soleil inspired maneuvers interspersed into the set kept fans on their toes. New Politics opened the show.

Rush performed sans opener, playing two sets with an intermission break that went deep into their monstrous catalog. They were recently recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, an induction that was long overdue. True pioneers of progressive rock, they’ve maintained their core sound for decades and a rabid fan-base that has always followed in tow. The trio were definitely on their game Thursday night, performing well over two hours.

Luke Bryan rode his Dirt Road Diaries Tour into the Marcus Amphitheater to another sell-out. The show featured a trio of Academy of Country Music Award winners with Thompson Square and Florida Georgia Line opening the show. Plenty of denim and cowboy hats moved through the Summerfest grounds during the afternoon, eventually converging upon the Amphitheater around 7 p.m. Fans were treated to a spectacular light show and fantastic audio mix that spilled into the mist-filled air.

Alice Cooper did pack the BMO Harris Pavilion though, and the legendary shock rocker gave an entertaining set packed with classic hits.

On an evening when rising country star Chris Young was also playing upstairs in the Eagle’s Ballroom, the line to enter The Rave appeared to be a confused amalgamation of flannel, boots and leather pants. Once the venue staff ushered fans to their respective venues, order was restored and the assembled mass of black t-shirts were ready to rock.

The animated Metalocalypse series is slowly transforming into real-life scenario. Though Dethklok haven’t quite attained a billion fans as depicted in the series, the Thursday night crowd at The Rave suggested their cult following were out in full-force. It was a major disappointment that Machine Head had to pull off the tour a few days ago, due to an emergency hernia surgery for vocalist Robb Flynn.

Rise Against - The Rave - 2012 Tour

Rise Against pulled into The Rave in Milwaukee on Sept. 16, a day after headlining 2012 Riot Fest in Chicago. Their energetic set had fans spilling over the rail within seconds their first song, “Survivor Guilt” from “Endgame.” Guitarist Zach Blair and vocalist Tim McIlrath were all-systems-go from the opening note, both leaping about the stage and feeding off the fans’ energy.
