Shinedown - 2013 Amaryllis tour 1

Shinedown have toured relentlessly since they released “Amaryllis” in March 2012. The album peaked at the top spot on Billboard’s Rock Chart and has since produced a trio of chart-topping singles. They also headlined the successful UPROAR Music Festival in addition to their own tour and a number of large summer festivals. The second night of their current tour rolled into the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisc. on Feb. 2, 2013. Three Days Grace co-headlined the bill with P.O.D. opening the show.

Shinedown - 2012 UPROAR Music Festival

The 2012 Rockstar Energy Drink UPROAR Festival pulled into Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain in Scranton on Tuesday, August 28, with a lineup that elevated itself atop the list of traveling hard-rock music festivals. Not a small task considering that Mayhem, Carnival of Madness, Vans Warped and Avalanche are competing events.

Motley Crue - 2012 Rock USA

In its second year, the 2012 Rock USA music festival in Oshkosh, Wisc. featured a solid three-day lineup that included Shinedown, Motley Crue and Kid Rock as headliners for July 12-14, respectively. The second day performances by Drowning Pool, Hinder, Tesla and Motley Crue had a tough act to follow, considering the incredible first day performance by Shinedown.

Shinedown - Rock USA

The second annual Rock USA music festival in Oshkosh, Wisc. got off to a fantastic start on Thursday, July 12, 2012. Considering the inaugural event was kicked off with headliners Daughtry, Journey and KISS last year, this year’s festival had some big shoes to fill. Shinedown, Motley Crue and Kid Rock looked to take Rock USA to higher grounds over the next three days. Given the sell-out of VIP seats in record time, one can conclude that Rock USA is moving in the right direction. Papa Roach and Skillet complemented Shinedown’s opening day lineup, and all three bands came in ready to rock.

Brent Smith Shinedown Avalanche Tour The Rave Milwaukee 2012

Shinedown could very well go down in history as having one of the greatest frontmen in rock and roll.  The band also has that special sauce with a bite to make them stand out in a world saturated by musicians. Each one of their four studio albums placed on rock charts and not many rock acts can say that.  Collectively their albums have already sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

zach myers Shinedown Avalanche Tour The Rave Milwaukee 2012The group just released their fourth studio album, Amaryllis, and it has already spawned the radio rock anthem “Bully.”  Alongside Amaryllis’ release accompanied an eBook FOR YOUR SAKE: Inside the Making of Shinedown’s Amaryllis. It is an interactive book with 75 pages of words, never-before-seen photos, and videos. The eBook was a joint effort with rock journalist Jonah Bayer and Atlantic Records. The eBook is available for purchase here for $5.99.

Last night as Shinedown took the stage the first thing that struck me was Brent’s appearance.  Last time I saw Shinedown was back in 2010 and Brent looked like he filled out (it happens to the best of us).  Yet, when he walked out onstage last night, my mouth dropped. He looked fantastic! His weight loss didn’t just affect his physique; his energy level was at an all-time high. Brent was intense and much more dramatic than he was two years ago. Now let’s get something straight here–back in 2010 I thought the show was amazing; this time around I was just blown away.

Brent and Zach mix to make up that special sauce I was talking about earlier. Their comradery onstage shows the love between the guys.  Zach took to his solos with such ease as not to skip a beat. As many Shinedown fans know, Zach takes to his solo work when Shinedown is in hiatus mode, so he manages to keep his chops up to par.

I do need to mention the spectacular lighting for Shinedown. I really didn’t think the stage was going to be so lit up as it was even though this is Shinedown we are talking about.  The lighting was so poor for the openers Art of Dying and Adelitas Way that there was some concern of what it was going to look like when the headliners hit the stage.  All the light was aimed at the back of the stage by the drummer yet both openers took the very front of the stage with little light.

The set was a great mix of songs from each of their 4 albums and the night ended with some of their biggest hits to date including “Second Chance,” “Simple Man,” and “Bully.”

Shinedown Unveil “AMARYLLIS”

Shinedown Bully Cover

Atlantic recording group Shinedown has announced the upcoming release of their much anticipated new album.  “AMARYLLIS” will arrive in stores and at all digital retailers on March 27th, 2012.

“AMARYLLIS” will be heralded by the eagerly awaited new single, “Bully.” The track is Shinedown’s first new music since seeing all six singles from 2008’s “THE SOUND OF MADNESS” go to #1 on the rock radio chart.  Today, “Bully” impacts at multi-format rock radio outlets nationwide while also going on sale at all DSPs.  “AMARYLLIS” will be available for pre-order beginning January 17th via  A series of bundles will be on offer, featuring an array of exclusive extras – full details will be announced shortly.

Shinedown frontman Brent Smith explains:  “I’ve always seen Shinedown as its own entity – this living thing that’s been growing and developing and evolving over the past 10 years.  During the recording, the vision of what Shinedown is and where it’s going became completely clear.  ‘AMARYLLIS’ is the manifestation of that vision, the centerpiece of what Shinedown is.  It reflects on everything we’ve done and where we’re heading.  It’s a message of empowerment, perseverance, and inspiration that I think speaks to fans that have been with us since the beginning as well as those who are just learning about who we are and what we’re about.  I can’t wait for the world to hear it.”

Recorded at Cavallo’s Lightning Sound studios outside of Los Angeles and a pair of Hollywood landmarks, Ocean Way Recording and Capitol Studios, “AMARYLLIS” sees Shinedown joining forces once more with multiple Grammy Award-winning producer Rob Cavallo (Kid Rock, Green Day), who previously collaborated with the band on 2008’s record-breaking “THE SOUND OF MADNESS.”  That album proved Shinedown’s mainstream breakthrough, debuting at #8 on the Billboard 200 before spending 120 consecutive weeks on the chart.

“THE SOUND OF MADNESS” made rock music history, with each of its six singles reaching #1 on the airplay rankings.  Among them are such hits as “Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom),” “Devour,” “The Sound of Madness,” “The Crow and The Butterfly,” the gold certified “If You Only Knew,” and the double-platinum certified crossover smash, “Second Chance“ – all of which rose to the top of the airplay charts, marking a genuinely stunning streak of rock radio classics.

Shinedown supported “THE SOUND OF MADNESS” with a wide range of live TV appearances, including performances on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Today Show, CBS’ The Early Show, and the 2010 NHL Awards show.  In 2009, the band received an American Music Award nomination for “Best Alternative Rock Band.”

Shinedown’s unprecedented ascendancy over multi-format rock radio initially began with their RIAA platinum certified 2003 debut “LEAVE A WHISPER” and its gold certified 2005 follow-up, “US AND THEM.”  Together, both albums yielded seven consecutive top 5 radio hits, including “Fly From the Inside,” “45,” “Simple Man,” “Burning Bright,” “Heroes,” “I Dare You,” and of course, the #1 blockbuster, “Save Me,” which dominated Active Rock radio for a remarkable 12 successive weeks.

Shinedown is: Brent Smith (vocals), Barry Kerch (drums), Zach Myers (guitars), and Eric Bass (bass).

Interview: Zach Myers and Chris Allen the Soullow Acoustic Tour

While Shinedown is prepping to go into the studio for a new album, Shinedown guitarist, Zach Myers decided to hit the road with his good friend Chris Allen. You can read about the Soullow Acoustic Tour‘s stop in Michigan here.

Peter Lizano caught up with the dynamic duo in Michigan to discuss the tour and to get the lowdown on Shinedown.

Zach Myers Welcomes You into his Living Room

Zach Myers & Chris Allen SoulLow Acoustical Tour
Uli’s House of Rock – Lansing, MI

What do you do when you’re in the biggest rock band out there now – Shinedown – and you’re done touring, after three years, and you have a month off before going back in the studio doing preproduction on the new album? Well, if you’re Zach Myers, the guitarist for Shinedown, you tell your best friend, Chris Allen from Ingramhill, to hit the road for a month playing acoustic small venue shows.

As a fan of Shinedown for several years and seeing the different roles Zach has played within Shinedown, I was looking forward to hearing him sing as he did when he was with his band, Fairwell. Knowing that he was going to be in Lansing, MI, I decided to make the trip to check it out.

Arriving at Uli’s House of Rock, I foresaw an interesting night ahead as the bar had a ‘biker bar’ feel to it.  The opening bands ranged from hardcore metal, blues-style rock, hard rock and a German owner who was as cool as cool can be.

After a quick turnaround from the last band, Zach & Chris came on stage and opened with a cover of Need To Breathe song, “The Outsiders.” After the first song, Zach let the crowd know there was no setlist and if there was anything anyone wanted to hear, to just shout it out; just not “Simple Man.”

Songs ranged from The Blacks Crowes, Oasis, to Tom Petty. Along with those, a few Shinedown songs like “Burning Bright” and “Breaking Inside” made the cut. Later in the show, Zach invited Jonathon Montoya, former guitarist from Saliva and Full Devil Jacket, to play the Full Devil Jacket song, “Where Did You Go?”

Throughout the night, Zach mentioned to everyone that he was welcoming them into his living room at home and it sure had that feel; the atmosphere made you feel like you were at a friend’s house as they jammed out.  As both Chris & Zach took turns singing, as well as doing some songs together, there was a moment where Zach sat down at the keyboards and played “Every Rose Has Its Thorns” and jokingly laughed as Chris knew most of the words to it.

The highlight of the night was when Zach sang the much covered song, “Hallelujah,” showing his vocal range and true passion for music.  The last song of the night, a cover of The Verve Pipe, “The Freshman,” with Zach having some guitar issue, he stopped playing and just sang the song with so much emotion, that in looking around at the crowd, left some with goosebumps.

After the show, Zach & Chris stayed to sign and talk with everyone until the last person left. In a time where the music industry is hurting, and bands talk about being fan-friendly, the guys in Shinedown certainly “walk it” and connect in a way very few bands can do. If you’re a fan of Shinedown or of good music in a very small setting, then you don’t want to miss this tour between two great musicians and friends, along with special guests at select venues.
