Hey All

I will be previewing my Edinburgh Alternative Fringe show, ‘Up The Anti!’ this Friday at Henry’s. featuring songs from all my past releases, unrecorded stuff, weird stories with a “humorous edge”. In other words a good ol’ Lach gig!
Candythief: Candythief is the musical persona of Diana De Cabarrus. Diana first emerged with a Fence Records release in 2005 and by 2007 was voted second best female act (after Bjork and before PJ Harvey) in the Is This Music? year end poll. Her songs have been heard on BBC Radios 1, 2, 6 and BBC Scotland and she’s shared the stage with everyone from Razorlight to King Creosote.
William Douglas: Brilliant Edinburgh songwriter. Feature act on the upcoming Song by Toad Records release ‘Lach’s Antihoot’.
Lee Patterson: A guitar slinging, roots songwriting force of nature also to be featured on the soon to be released Antihoot CD!  -Lach

SafetySuit on the road with Daughtry

SafetySuit Dekalb IL Convocation Center NIU

SafetySuit is riding high with their sophomore album hitting the #1 spot on iTunes the week of its release.   This pop/rock band from Tennessee also is celebrating their current spot as opener for Daughtry on the Break the Spell 2012 tour.

SafetySuit Dekalb IL Convocation Center NIULast night was the second stop opening for Daughtry as they hit the Convocation Center on the NIU campus.  The show took place in the arena that isn’t ideal for concerts.  Part of me feels pretty bad for SafetySuit as it took the crowd a while to warm up to them.  This is no knock to the band as they were amazing. I blame it more on the venue as the sound bounced around and made fans feel like they were in a less intimate space than they actually were.  I hope for future gigs on this tour the show gets a backdrop on the stage to help provide a solution to that sound problem, as the empty seats behind the stage only made the sound worse.  For that, I feel bad for the guys as it took the crowd to the tail end of their set to get off their feet and give back the energy the band was feeding the crowd.

SafetySuit’s “These Times” Music Video

The highlight of the set was their current single, “These Times,” where the music video is a compilation of fan submitted videos portraying their own hard times. The prelude to the song was Douglas sending out a message to those who are currently enduring tough circumstances, “These times are hard but they will pass.” Also a strong point of the night was the cover of “Hallelujah.”  It was after “Hallelujah” when Douglas jumped off stage and was in the pit serenading the front rows.  This is when the crowd started to get on their feet, as Douglas also reminded those in the arena that this was, in fact, a rock show.  It also didn’t take long for Douglas to leave the pit and greet fans with floor seats.  He really knows how to get the crowd pumped.

The set ended with “Stay,” one of the songs that helped launch their career.  It’s just too bad it took the crowd so long to catch the goodness SafetySuit was giving as the crowd was left wanting more.

Magic Milk’s New Video and Tour Dates

Magic Milk Tour Poster

Magic Milk is a garage/rock band from Chicago and they are headed out on the road! The tour starts on Saturday with dates that include a stop in Austin, TX at SXSW. The tour wraps up in Champaign, IL at Mike N Molly’s on the 18th. Check out their newest video where the band trashed a VFW hall below:

“Hopefully this didn’t cause any terrible flashbacks for any of those swell veterans hanging out that night. Magic Milk seem to have a unique knack for riling up even thee shittiest of crowds. Tonight was no exception, though we were all ready for a party regardless. This was a particularly wild one. Chris Kramer joined in on guitar. The ol’ sit and jump played out with a crowd surf, and a rather nasty ending. Oh, and whoever threw that giant condom filled pinata at us at 3:28, you suck. ‘Twas a hell of a shot, though. Second camera by the wonderful Mark Ciarleglio.”

Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band announce final dates of 2011 North American Tour

Bob Segaer and the silver bullet band

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band are rounding out the second leg of their hugely successful 2011 North American Tour with a series of dates on the west coast including Los Angeles, Oakland, and Phoenix, and topping it all off with a special New Year’s show in Las Vegas.  Seger originally conceived his 2011 Tour as a short spring run of 18-20 dates.  Due to the overwhelming response from fans, Seger nearly tripled the number of shows. The Vegas performance will be Seger’s 50th concert in 2011.

On September 13, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band made digital history of their own by offering fans a Free 6-Track Bonus EP on iTunes to celebrate the release of their digitally remastered multi-platinum Nine Tonight and Live Bullet concert albums.  During the one week promotion, Seger gave his fans 1,698,000 free downloaded tracks. The two live double albums debuted in the Top 10 on Billboard’s Top 200 Catalog Chart at #4 and #7, respectively.

Seger & his Silver Bullet Band’s live performances led to record sales in excess of 51 million including 11 platinum and seven multi-platinum RIAA-certified album awards. Seger holds the distinction in 2010 for the #1 Catalog Album of the Decade for his Greatest Hits, which has sold over nine million copies (U.S.A.) to date, posting an unbroken 17-year streak on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums and Catalog Albums charts.

DOWNLOAD: TRIBES – We Were Children

“The best American band in Britain.” – NME

“… distil[s] the best bits of 90s guitar music (from both sides of the pond) into raw rock’n’roll stories full of regret and nostalgia… as ramshackle as it is brilliant… fantastic.” – The Fly (UK)

“These things happen, we were children in the mid 90’s.” – Tribes, We Were Children

It’s not an apology: the chorus of Tribes’ single “We Were Children” is a call to action, a celebration of influence, and an acknowledgement that we are what we love. “People have said that Tribes are nostalgic in sentiment, but you spend your whole life writing your first record,” Tribes frontman Johnny Lloyd says. “The songs are about things you experience when you’re young.” Luckily for us, in their youth Tribes also experienced the raw power of Sonic Youth, the buzzing urgency of The Pixies, and the melodic swoon of Blur.

Formed in rough-and-tumble Camden, London in 2009 after guitarist Dan White tried to steal drummer Miguel Demelo’s wallet, Tribes have grown the old-fashioned way, eschewing an early web presence in favor of CDs passed out directly to friends. As luck would have it, their demos fell into the hands of Black Francis, leading to an opening slot with heroes The Pixies at a concert in London. Shortly after, the band’s buzz, perseverance, and reputation as a furiously energetic live act earned them a slot on their first UK tour, supporting the Mystery Jets.

Taking their DIY style to the streets earlier this spring, the band drew more than a thousand people to Camden High Street in London for their “We Were Children” video shoot. Crowding the streets with a mere 4 hours notice, the band and its fans managed to create a video, as well as a fair amount of mayhem, prior to getting shut down by police. Watch the video for “We Were Children” here:

Tribes recently signed with Island Records in the UK and just finished recording their debut LP with Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, Razorlight). The band will embark on their first American tour in September followed by the release of their album in early 2012. Tickets for the below dates go on sale Friday, August 5th.

TRIBES upcoming tour dates:

September 24 Brooklyn, NY Glasslands
September 25 Washington, DC Black Cat
September 27 Toronto, ON Horseshoe Tavern
September 28 New York, NY Mercury Lounge
September 29 Boston, MA Great Scott
October 1 Chicago, IL Schubas
October 3 Los Angeles, CA The Echo

Neon Indian Announces New Album & Fall Tour Dates

Era Extrañadue Sept. 13, 2011
Album cover art for Neon Indian’s Era Extraña

Neon Indian is the brainchild of Alan Palomo, who’s 2009 debut record Psychic Chasms not only earned the 20 year-old a spot on numerous year-end lists, but assisted the forming of a genre that, though known by a few names now (hypnagogic pop, glo-fi, chillwave), summoned a very unique and specific electro-mangled sound. Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and SPIN all praised Palomo for his adventurous new sound, and he was tapped to perform at top festivals like South by Southwest,  Bonnaroo, and Sasquatch and also scored opening slots for bands ranging from Massive Attack and The Flaming Lips to Phoenix and Chromeo.

After nearly two years on the road off the success of his debut, Palomo returns this fall with his proper follow-up LP, Era Extraña. This time around, we see a darker shaded sound document that tosses somewhere between an 8-bit shoegaze record and peering through the fence of a teenage apocalypse drive-in flick.

Written and recorded last winter in an efficiency apartment in Helsinki, Finland during its short solstice days, Era Extraña was ice sculpted from arpeggiated synth-scapes and scribbled journal entries made during his stint there alone in constant solitude. “It’s the closest you can get to feeling like you’re at the edge of the earth,” he says. “And there were moments where I lost sight of what I was really there to do.”

The sample-happy stylings of his previous efforts have been traded in for acid-stained commodore 64 jams (See ‘Polish Girl, ‘Future Sick’) and bit-pulped guitar sludge ballads (see ‘Hex Girlfriend’, ‘The Blindside Kiss’).  All throughout, the undulating moods of the record are guided by a haunted three-part instrumental titled Heart: Attack, Heart: Decay, and Heart: Release.  Once completed, the layers were then thawed and reassembled by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT), who mixed the album and did additional production with Palomo at his upstate Tarbox Studios.  The album sessions there were briefly taken on a scenic detour by a drop-in four-song EP collaboration with The Flaming Lips which was released earlier this year.

The album’s Spanish title plays with the loose-hinges of the word extraña, which not only directly translates into ‘strange’, but also means to ‘command the act of longing’. These themes of feeling an eerie absence in new strange times are explored throughout the album as a whole in his teenage ethos peppered lyrical musings in an end-days obsessed climate. Many of this is inspired by an ongoing love affair with the notion of what cyberpunk means in a year like 2011. The feeling can best be described in a recent interview where he noted, “We’re now living in the era mysticized by a lot of future-geared 70s and 80s cinema, but it’s definitely not quite how they imagined it.”

Era Extraña is slated for a September 13th release on Palomo’s own Static Tongues imprint in conjunction with Mom and Pop Records in North America, Transgressive Records in the United Kingdom and Europe, Pop Frenzy/Inertia in Australia and Big Nothing Records in Japan.

Emily’s Army Announce August Tour Dates

July 20, 2011 – Los Angeles, CA – Emily’s Army have announced additional tour dates in August in support of their full-length debut Don’t Be A Dick, which was released by Adeline Records on June 14th. Alternative Press praised the album as “Overwhelmingly tight and poppy; quite impressive for the young pups they are. When considering that these songs were written by kids barely in high school, it’s a bit of a jaw-dropper”.

Hailing from the East Bay, Emily’s Army is comprised of Max Becker on bass, Cole Becker on guitar, Travis Neumann on guitar, and drummer Joey Armstrong. At the ripe age of 15, 16, and 17 years old, the Oakland based band has already spent two years touring up and down the West Coast. The band’s name comes from Max and Cole Becker’s 15-year old cousin Emily, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis in 1998 and has suffered from the disease her entire life. In tribute, the band adopted the name Emily’s Army, which also happens to be the moniker for a fundraising organization in their cousin’s honor.

At a time when young bands are homogenized and tailor made for consumption and eventual regurgitation, Emily’s Army is a breath of fresh air – rocking out together for the pure fact that they love playing music and they love playing together. Don’t Be A Dick by Emily’s Army is the sound of the torchbearers to come.

“90’s tinged old-school pop-punk… Don’t Be A Dick is an undeniably fun and amusing listen.”
Absolute Punk

“The California quartet deliver raggedly sharp guitar licks and plenty of humor.”
Entertainment Weekly

“Emily’s Army is a rare case of raw and undeveloped talent that’s still good enough to be injected onto a mainstream setting…themes of adolescent struggles are abundant, but signs of a band ahead of its teenage face surface with socio-political themes as well.”

Jason Mraz Announced Plans for his International Tour

Atlantic recording artist Jason Mraz has announced plans for a special international tour, an extraordinary itinerary that will see the Grammy Award-winning tunesmith visiting North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia.  More than just a concert tour, Mraz’ worldwide journey will see him celebrating music’s lasting power to inspire change and help others through global citizenship.

The majority of the tour will find Mraz teaming up with his longtime friend, percussionist Noel “Toca” Rivera, for a series of acoustic dates celebrating the tenth anniversary of their independently released classic, “LIVE AT JAVA JOE’S.”  The schedule gets underway with a performance at the Musicians United For Safe Energy (MUSE) benefit concert slated for August 7th at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California.  Proceeds from the event – which features a star-studded line-up that includes Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Morello, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Doobie Brothers, and many others – will go to support Japan disaster relief efforts and organizations worldwide working to promote safe, alternative, non-nuclear energy.

From there, Jason and Toca will head to Kansas City, Missouri, where they will perform at this year’s Farm Aid benefit concert, scheduled for August 13th at Livestrong Sporting Park.

In September, Mraz and Rivera’s impromptu travels will begin in Morocco, and will take them throughoutEurope, where they will immerse themselves in local culture, seeking unique performance spaces and treasured surf spots.  Their European tour will kick off in Southwest France, where they will headline the inaugural Groundswell Festival, an eco-friendly surf and music festival being held in the Landes Region near Hossegor, the surf capital ofEurope.  Following the festival, the duo will make stops in Prague and Berlin.

November will see them performing special select shows at such iconic venues as Australia’s Sydney Opera House and New York’s Carnegie Hall.  While in Australia, Mraz and Rivera will take the opportunity to visit some of the world’s treasures there that they have never experienced, including Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock).  The tour will conclude on November 28th and 29th with a pair of eagerly awaited, special, intimate shows at Spreckels Theatre in Mraz’s adopted hometown of San Diego.

Mraz will also perform a number of U.S. shows fronting his own Super Band.  For up-to-the-minute details and on-sale information, please visit

Long known for his many philanthropic activities, Mraz recently established the “Jason Mraz Foundation,” formed in order to help sustain a number of charities for which he has been a dedicated and impassioned advocate. Among the organizations supported by the Jason Mraz Foundation are Free The Slaves (, dedicated to eradicating child slavery around the world; True Colors Fund (, which promotes the advancement of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equality; Surfrider Foundation (, dedicated to protecting our world’s oceans, beaches, and waves; the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) (, which works to protect wildlife and wild places and to ensure a healthy environment for all life on earth; youth organizations VH1 Save the Music ( and Free the Children (; the School of the Performing Arts in Richmond County (SPARC) (; and the health/rehabilitation charities MusiCares ( and Life Rolls On ( For additional information, please visit

What’s more, Mraz is featured in the acclaimed new documentary film, The Big Fix, filmmakers Josh and Rebecca Tickell’s damning expose of last year’s Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.  The film – for which Mraz also served as Associate Producer, as well as contributing a new song, “Collapsible Plans,” featured in the end credits – was an official selection of the Cannes Film Festival with a special screening, and will be shown later this year in New York and Los Angeles.

Hailed as one of the modern era’s most gifted pop troubadours, Mraz has shared stages with percussionist Noel “Toca” Rivera for more than a decade.  The two musicians first met back in 2000, when Mraz was just making his mark on the San Diego coffee house scene.  Enthralled by the young songwriter’s free-flowing lyrical mastery, Rivera invited Mraz to join the eponymous trio he fronted alongside his brother Carlos.  The group hit the road, travelling California’s highways and byways together in a beat-up Winnebago, inspiring Mraz’s classic song, “Dream Life of Rand McNally.”  When Carlos decided to take time off, Jason and Toca continued to collaborate as a duo, earning acclaim and passionate audience responses wherever they performed.  Mraz’s guitar and vocals match beautifully with Rivera’s intuitive djembe playing and the two maintain a long friendship and collaborative relationship, recording and touring together to this day.

“I dig the groove Toca lays down with his drum,” Mraz says, “and the delicate touch he finds on the harmonies.  He’s like every member of the Dave Matthews Band and Boyz II Men rolled up in one prize wind-up teddy bear designed to beat a drum.”

Mraz of course went on to become a worldwide superstar, a multi-talented singer/songwriter who made pop history with the sensational single, “I’m Yours.”  The track – featured on Jason’s RIAA platinum-certified album, “WE SING. WE DANCE. WE STEAL THINGS.” – was a momentous #1 smash, earning ASCAP’s 2010 “Song of the Year” award while also setting the record for the longest-running song in the 51-year history of Billboard’s “Hot 100.”

Robert Plant Brings Joy to Ravinia

Robert Plant & The Band of Joy
Ravinia – Highland Park, IL

Robert Plant was back at Ravinia last night. He said he couldn’t believe he was back there, but couldn’t remember the reason why he didn’t want to come back. He proceeded to laugh it off and made several comments throughout the show about losing your memory as you get older.  Just as a note, Robert is going to be 63 years young this year.  He’s out on painting towns red with the new lineup of Band of Joy.  They released their self-titled album last year that took the number 8 spot of Rolling Stone’s list of best albums for 2010.  The new Band of Joy is composed of Robert, Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller, Darrell Scott, Bryon House, and Marco Giovino.

The night was unexpectedly filled with Zeppelin favorites like “Black Dog,” “Black Country Woman,“ and “Ramble On” to name a few. For all those who asked me how last night’s performance was I just say, “He’s still the same Robert Plant!”  He still has the voice, the quirks, and the ability to put the audience in a trance, roughly all 18,000 of us.  I am going to go out on a limb here, even though I wasn’t around to see Zeppelin live, but the fans haven’t changed much either; they’ve just grown up.  There was still lots of dancing and that very unique smell that Zeppelin fans have grown to love, weed.

One of the highlights of the night was “Black Country Woman.”  The crowd could tell he was feeling that song as he belted it out.  It wasn’t cold outside in Highland Park, but we still had chills running down our spines. Then there was a Zeppelin favorite that sent the crowd over the edge and into the aisles at Ravinia. It was good old “What is and What Should Never Be.”

The Band of Joy is really a talented group of players. I felt as if I was sitting in on a jam or practice session with them.  The nods, the signals, and the cues were there so everyone could hit their mark. The only thing that made me, and a handful of us, scratch our heads was Patty Griffin’s constant “grinding” motion onstage.  Of course that night was a night of repetition and constants but not just from the band. There was also a member of the audience that insisted on yelling “Thank You” after every solo and song. It was cute and funny at first, but by the end of the night the rows of people ahead of him really wanted to smack him.

Don’t go in expecting Zeppelin because even the Zeppelin songs were re-arranged with more of an experimental rock feel.  You can go into the show expecting the same Robert Plant that can send chills down your spine by hitting his mark. This is a show to not miss!

Josh Groban Receives Glowing Reviews for Current “Straight To You” Tour

“The Concert Felt Like a House Party in a Really Big, Well-Lit House” – New Orleans Times Picayune; “Straight To You” Continues Through November in North America

BURBANK, CA–(Marketwire – May 24, 2011) – On May 12th, Josh Groban launched the North American leg of his 2011 “Straight To You” World Tour and is receiving some of the best reviews of his career. With a set designed by the award-winning British multi-media creative and digital agency Knifedge, which has pioneered the use of projection with live theater events, the tour gives fans the feeling of an intimate theater setting through stage design, lighting, and projection, as well as through the spontaneity and interactivity Groban delighted his fans with during last year’s “Before We Begin” shows. Groban is not only performing an ever-changing set-list of fan favorites from his best-selling albums and his recent platinum-seller Illuminations, he is also taking questions from the audience via text, which concert-goers are given instructions on how to send before and during each show.

Read what the critics have had to say so far about “Straight To You”….

“Groban’s genuine boy-next-door demeanor in the midst of violins, french horns, percussion, cello, piano, guitars, bass and drums makes him and his music all the more endearing. He appears truly comfortable performing, like it’s his second home.” – The Dallas Morning News

“Listening to Groban’s commanding tenor navigate ‘Oceano’ and ‘Alla Luce,’ for example, was to us the same as admiring a painting at the Museum of Fine Arts — it wasn’t necessary to understand the lyrics to understand the song. … Sometimes beauty, in and of itself, can be both motive and reward. And regardless of the context you’re coming from, it can be pretty inspirational, too.” – Houston Press

“Groban has boyish charm that belies his big voice. If you want to dismiss him as popera, be my guest; but do take a moment to listen to his voice sometime, just for its qualities and tone, and tell me it doesn’t draw you in.” -Dallas Voice

“Impeccable vocals, wit, make Groban concert memorable. Groban proved to be quite the showman, but his vocals truly made the show memorable. He managed to belt powerful and enunciated lyrics, then quickly switch to a soothing falsetto. Few performers have the ability to perform that way live without a hitch.” – Wichita Eagle

“That had been one of the purposes of the stage set created for his ‘Straight To You’ tour — to allow for more interaction between Groban and his fans, whether it be answering questions audience members could text in before the show or getting down among the adoring. But it’s simply the case of a talented artist putting his instrument to its best and most effective use. And Groban sings with such obvious emotion and sincerity — not to mention skill — that it’s difficult not to be won over.” – Tulsa World

As a nod to his devoted student fans of all ages, Groban is offering tickets for $25 to anyone who presents a valid student i.d. at the venue’s box office. Tickets for all shows are on sale now. All remaining dates are listed below. For more information, please visit
