Video: Starting Up a Brewery

Farm to Barrel from Turnstyle Video on Vimeo.

For any home brewers out there, this is an amazing video to check out about the two founders of Almanac Beer Company and how they started the company from nothing. Founders, Jesse Freidman and Damian Fagan met at a brew club in San Francisco and started home brewing right in their backyard. The video explains their start and the unique beers that they brew using different processes and ingredients in the beer. After watching this video, I’m sure you will want to start home brewing yourself. Definitely, an aspiring video of starting from scratch in the beer industry.

Gus Van Sant, Executive Producer of ACT UP!, a documentary chronicling the early days of AIDS activism, to host benefit for film

Gus Van Sant, Executive Producer of ACT UP!, a documentary chronicling the early days of AIDS activism, to host benefit for film
Star-studded event’s sponsors include Susan Sarandon, Christine Vachon, Phil Donahue, Judith Light, Carson Kressley and Ted Allen

NEW YORK, NY—May 9, 2011:On Wednesday, May 25, 2011, Academy Award-winning director Gus Van Sant will host a cocktail reception from 6:30-8:30 PM at New York City’s LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th Street (between 7th & Greenwich Avenues) in Manhattan to raise funds for ACT UP!, a new documentary film now in production.* Van Sant, the acclaimed director of films including Drugstore CowboyMy Own Private Idaho, To Die For, Good Will Hunting and Milk is overseeing the production. A portion of the proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit AIDS organizations worldwide through a collaborative partnership with UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS.

The film traces the history of ACT UP – the AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power – a group of New Yorkers who mobilized when municipal, state and federal government all turned a blind eye as their friends, families and loved ones were being decimated by a then-untreatable disease. ACT UP’s urgent mission was to pressure government to acknowledge the raging AIDS epidemic and take emergency measures to combat it. ACT UP’s founding New York chapter spawned branches throughout America and across the globe. Refusing to be passive victims, AIDS activists updated the civil disobedience tactics of the 1960s with a media-savvy flair that riveted the attention of the nation. Ultimately, ACT UP forced timid political leaders and an apathetic government bureaucracy to respond comprehensively to a grave public health crisis.
Assembled from hundreds of hours of historic footage and contemporary interviews under the guidance of Producers/Directors Scott Robbe (Queer Eye For The Straight Guy) and Jerry Kolber (National Geographic Television, Jedi Junkies), a major asset of the film is never-before-seen footage shot in 1987 and 1988 by Scott Robbe featuring interviews with key members of ACT UP! amidst the organization’s most tumultuous period. ACT UP! is being co-directed by Ellen Spiro (Body of War, named Best Documentary of 2007 by the National Board of Review)

Within a few years of its founding, ACT UP’s strategically-targeted activism spurred the Food & Drug Administration to shave years off the approval process for medications that held promise to treat AIDS and led to an almost 50% decrease in the cost of treatments. It is the legacy of ACT UP to have transformed what was once a death sentence into a manageable disease. Importantly, ACT UP! shows how ordinary citizens can mobilize to successfully challenge outmoded government policies and protocols. Indeed, ACT UP! sparked the emergence of dozens of patient and consumer advocacy groups around the nation and worldwide to strategically pressure government, corporations and institutions to be more alert and responsive to life-threatening health crises.

By drawing on extensive archives of footage filmed on handheld cameras by video activists, the film captures the dynamic energy of protest. You are there as demonstrators aggressively take their fight to jar public awareness into the majestic halls of Grand Central Station, onto the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and directly to the Centers for Disease Control and the FDA in Washington. Combined with current interviews of key participants and contemporaneous news reports on ACT UP’s often shocking tactics, spliced together in a fast-paced, music video style of editing with a hip, kinetic soundtrack, the audience’s senses are carried along with the irresistible force of democracy being fulfilled.
One reason why ACT UP! is an essential film for our time is because it captures the story of what was one of the most effective grassroots movements of the modern era. Now, when HIV transmission rates are on the rise among many demographics and the battle for marriage equality is being fought in voting booths and courthouses across America, a new generation of activists need to be inspired and emboldened. Just as Van Sant’s Milk brought the important story of the early gay rights movement to a new generation, ACT UP! will re-contextualize the powerful accomplishments of AIDS activists for a 21st century audience.

ACT UP! is currently in production with the expectation of premiering at Sundance 2012, followed by wide theatrical release and television broadcast. A companion record album produced by Anthony Rapp (Rent) and a coffee-table book co-written by producers/directors Scott Robbe and Jerry Kolber will accompany the film’s release. Sponsors of and participants in the May 25th fundraiser for the film in addition to Gus Van Sant include Susan Sarandon, Christine Vachon (Producer, Far From Heaven, Boys Don’t Cry, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), fashion guru and author Carson Kressley of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, talk show host Phil Donahue, food critic and Chopped host Ted Allen, and openly-gay and HIV-positive New York State Senator Tom Duane.

* Mr. Van Sant may have scheduling conflicts that could prevent him from attending the event.

VIDEO: Esoterica Covers Delerium’s Silence

Remember when Sarah Mclachlan collaborated with Delerium for the song “Silence”? It was used in the Brokedown Palace soundtrack. The UK rock band Esoterica covered the song and it truly has a dark edge. The video is receiving airplay in the UK on Kerrang and Scuzz.

We reviewed their latest album, The Fool, here.

Video: Machine Head Live at Rockstar Mayhem 2008

This is Machine Head’s first song from their Mayhem set in San Diego, CA.  Sorry for the audio.  We were standing next to speakers and monitors and that isn’t the ideal place for taping.

Other Mayhem Videos:
Underoath Song 1 and Song 2
Slipknot Song 1 and Song 2

Others to come:

Video: Slipknot’s Performance at Rockstar Mayhem in San Diego Song II

I’ve been working on the video gallery to actually store all these videos we have.  As of right now we all have to deal with single postings of each song. Pain in the ass, yes, will it be worth it when the gallery goes up!

Pardon the bass distortion on the Slipknot videos that I am posting. Standing right next to the speakers and monitors doesn’t make for great sound quality even when volumes are adjusted on the camera. This disclaimer is also for Slipknot’s first song they performed for the night.

This would also be a great time to do a disclosure. The Dead Hub obtained permission to video Rockstar Mayhem 2008. We are not responsible for the acts and messages displayed by the artists or patrons in the videos. None of our videos are censored so you view at our own risk.

We also have videos from Underoath (Song 1/Song 2) with more Mayhem artists to come.

Slipknot’s Second Song of the night.

Video: Underoath at Rockstar Mayhem II

Here is the second song from the Underoath set at Mayhem in San Diego. If you need to see the first song it is here. I know that the video screen overlaps the right side a bit. I decided I didn’t want to compromise any more of the video quality. As mentioned before the video gallery is coming so all the videos will be in one place, so stay tuned.

UPDATE: Had to switch videoplayers…Sorry back to the Crappy Youtube vids until I can find a better player without paying hundreds of dollars an hour. I promise I’ll get a better HQ Videoplayer.

Video: Underoath Live at Mayhem 2008

This is the first of 2 videos from Underoath’s performance on the Rockstar Mayhem Tour in San Diego, CA. Look out for more Mayhem Videos and a Video Gallery coming your way.

UPDATE: Sorry, switched video players. I hated to do it. I’m on the hunt for a HQ Player online that won’t cost hundreds of dollars on my end to use. In other words, we are back to the crappy Youtube quality videos. Sorry, it kills me too!

Rockstar Mayhem 2008 Slipknot Cricket Wireless - Chula Vista, CA 7/16/2008

I am going to admit none of the Dead Crew stayed for the Slipknot set. It was decided we’d rather beat traffic out of the parking lot. I must say even though we only stayed for 4 songs of the set, it could have been the most interesting 4 songs.

The show started with the smoke machines producing so much smoke photos and video were tough to get for the first song. Corey, the frontman of the band, was drooling onstage that made for some gross but very interesting video. We’ll have that up soon, I promise.

As Sparky got kicked out of the barricade after her 2 songs of shooting video she was walking up the walkway to the right of the stage. As she sees me, I notice a security guard and a guy in mask running up the way. Of course it wasn’t good. Sparky ended up being pushed into the temporary railings and down she and the railings went. Apparently Slipknot’s drummer jumped offstage and ran over everybody in his way. It was very rockstar-like, but also very arrogant and rude.

After we peeled Sparky up from the ground and she figured out what just happened to her we gathered the Crew and headed out as Slipknot went into the only Slipknot song I knew, “Before I Forget.” A few of us just don’t understand Slipknot, Corey is such a great singer and isn’t an eye sore yet people love Slipknot in masks. Yes, I understand it’s a gimmick.

I am really enjoying Corey singing for Apocalyptica on “I’m Not Jesus.” That is a great song. If you haven’t heard it yet, don’t worry it doesn’t sound like Slipknot, and you can actually understand the words he sings.
