It was day one of the three day occupation of Schubas. Yes, occupation. All you have to do is walk into Schubas and its all Meat Puppets!! Tonight we all had the lovely pleasure of listening to the East Coast band Black Wine and King Sparrow open for the legendary American Indie rockers. To be quite honest here, the Black Wine band’s songs were 200 times catchier than King Sparrow’s music. Mind you Black Wine had no stage presence and made awkward silences between songs, but I guess it doesn’t matter as much when your music is good.

More on the Meat Puppets along with tour dates and photos, after the jump…

meatpuppetsschubas11_12_20095.jpgThe first thing I noticed as The Meat Puppets took the stage was Iggy Pop playing drums. Ok, I had to do a double take and I wasn’t the only one that did. Their new full-time drummer, Ted Marcus , replacing founding drummer Derrick Bostrom, resembles the punk icon POP. Cris Kirkwood was returning on bass after the band breakup in 2002 with his brother Kurt at the lead on guitar.

The room was crowded with smiling faces and many dancing people. When I say dancing, I mean lucid, transcendental-ish dancing. There were many inebriated patrons in the crowd and many also arrived high on arrival. Nobody seemed to mind and it made the show that much more entertaining. The floor literally shook like a 6point earthquake had hit Schubas. I didn’t really think Meat Puppets’ fans as active dancers but then again last night was my first time seeing them live.

The night was filled with fans yelling songs to Curt but I don’t think he was paying attention. He looked like he was on a mission that night with the set list already set for the night. Both Shandon and Cris looked to Curt to lead the entire night. We all watched take cues from Curt as he jammed on his solos waiting for the transitions into the next song.

Man, I see why they can perform for three days at Schubas. The Meat Puppets have been around since 1980 and have 12 albums under their belt. The newest release is off Megaforce Records called Sewn Together. They also joined Built to Spill and Stone Temple Pilots on tour this year. If you need to clean your rock palate and have a good ol’ time definitely check out this indie rock trio when they hit your town.
